OILBACK Microemulsion for Formation Damage Control in the Near-Wellbore Zone

Manufactured by Oil Energy, Russia
OILBACK Microemulsion for Formation Damage Control in the Near-Wellbore Zone

Product description

OILBACK is a microemulsion whose main purpose is to reduce formation damage in the near-wellbore zone by reducing the depth of invasion of well fluid filtrate into the productive formation during well construction and workover.
The OILBACK microemulsion system is widely used to reduce capillary forces, lower interfacial tension at the oil–water and gas–water interfaces and improve the flowback of fluid and oil from the near-wellbore zone. This makes it possible to relieve water block more effectively, reduce the skin factor and increase the productivity index

Operating principle

The microemulsion particles (micelles) of OILBACK are small and highly penetrating, so they effectively enter pore channels of various sizes in the near-wellbore zone. Under conditions of strong capillary effects, the OILBACK microemulsion acts as an ultra-low interfacial tension system, facilitating the displacement of bound water and well fluid filtrate, which improves the flow properties of the near-wellbore zone and eases hydrocarbon inflow to the wellbore

Physical Properties and Chemical Composition

Microemulsion of non-ionic surfactants in an aqueous / aqueous-organic phase

Benefits

  • -1-
Reduces skin factor and increases the productivity index of the well
  • -2-
Accelerates well clean-up and increases production rate by reducing near-wellbore damage and relieving water block
  • -3-
Has no adverse effect on the key properties of well fluids at properly selected dosages
  • -4-
Effective even at low concentrations (from 0.5% by volume)
  • -5-
Disperses and dissolves in formation water, process water and brines, which simplifies implementation
  • -6-
Environmentally safe and non-toxic when application procedures are followed

Application and Dosage Recommendations

  • Recommended dosages of OILBACK are 2 to 8 L per 1 m³ of well fluid, depending on the type of operation, salinity and reservoir sensitivity
  • Where the fluid is in direct contact with the productive formation, the recommended dosage is usually 4–5 L/m³, which provides sufficient reduction of interfacial tension and effective relief of water block
  • When preparing systems with OILBACK, foaming should be monitored and, if necessary, a defoamer added that has been checked for compatibility with the microemulsion and the well fluid
  • For optimum results, preliminary laboratory testing of OILBACK on cores / near-wellbore models is recommended to evaluate the effect on skin factor and the degree of permeability recovery

Packaging and Storage Conditions

OILBACK is packed in 200 L steel drums. Store in dry, warm rooms away from moisture and heating appliances, avoiding freezing and direct sunlight

Safety Requirements

Appropriate personal protective equipment (protective gloves, safety glasses and, if necessary, respiratory protection) must be used when handling OILBACK. Detailed recommendations on safe handling, storage and disposal are given in the product Safety Data Sheet, which should be read before starting work

Q&A from Oil Energy Experts

OILBACK is used in drill-in fluid formulations for drilling the productive interval, in hydraulic fracturing fluids (as a flowback aid), and in kill and perforation fluids. In all cases the goal is to minimize near-wellbore damage, reduce water block and ensure the fullest possible permeability recovery after the operation
