NERPAC Polyanionic Cellulose Fluid Loss Control for Drilling Fluids

Grades: HV - high viscosity, LV - low viscosity
NERPAC Polyanionic Cellulose Fluid Loss Control for Drilling Fluids

Product description

NERPAC is a group of products based on polyanionic cellulose (PAC), developed for fluid loss control and rheology adjustment of water-based drilling fluids.
NERPAC has higher resistance to temperature, salts and biodegradation compared with conventional Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose.
NERPAC grades form a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall and allow rheology to be adjusted over a wide range of downhole conditions

Physical Properties and Chemical Composition

NERPAC is a polysaccharide cellulose derivative with the chemical formula [C6H9O5CH2COONa]n

Benefits

The product is manufactured in accordance with ISO 13500 / API 13A, which ensures predictable quality and compatibility with industry standards
  • -1-
Efficient fluid loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids, forming a thin, dense, low-permeability filter cake
  • -2-
Higher thermal and salt stability compared with standard CMC; maintains low fluid loss in fresh-water and salt-saturated systems
  • -3-
Contributes to shale inhibition and reduces swelling and disintegration of clay formations, improving wellbore stability
  • -4-
Reduces the probability of differential sticking through a high-quality filter cake and stabilization of the wellbore walls
  • -5-
Contains no starch or CMC, which simplifies quality control and eliminates the influence of impurities

Application and Dosage Recommendations

  • Drilling fluid treated with NERPAC retains its properties under prolonged exposure to temperatures up to 120 °C, which covers the range of most operating conditions for water-based systems
  • Working concentrations depend on the solids content, since NERPAC adsorbs on particle surfaces; the typical range of initial dosages is 5–15 kg/m³ of drilling fluid, with subsequent adjustment based on laboratory test results and fluid loss monitoring
  • For NERPAC LV grade, the dosage is selected in the range that reduces filtration without excessive viscosity increase, particularly in high-salinity and high-solids systems
  • For NERPAC HV grade, the dosage is aimed at simultaneously providing the required rheology (viscosity, gel strength) and filter cake, particularly in difficult conditions and where enhanced cuttings transport is required

Packaging and Storage Conditions

NERPAC is packed in 25 kg bags with a polyethylene liner. Store in a dry, warm room away from moisture and heating appliances, preventing wetting and damage to the packaging

Safety Requirements

Personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses and, if necessary, a respirator) must be used when handling NERPAC products; avoid dust formation and contact of the powder with eyes and the respiratory tract. Further information is given in the product Safety Data Sheet, which must be read before use

Q&A from Oil Energy Experts

Compared with standard CMC, the polyanionic cellulose in NERPAC LV/HV provides lower API/ISO fluid loss through the formation of a thin, dense filter cake, as well as higher resistance to salts and to temperatures up to 120 °C. NERPAC LV/HV is manufactured to Technical Conditions 2458-091-68836796-2014 and meets the requirements of ISO 13500:2008 / API Spec 13A for drilling fluid materials
